2014 Hawaiian Natural Honey Challenge

Judges’ Bios

1.      Ed Bouc,  owner of the award-winning One Heart Coffee Farm, Hamakua. Ed and his wifeEdie, a flight attendant, moved to the Big Island one and a half years ago totheir coffee farm. They now produce award winning Hamakua Coffee and want to be involved in nurturing and caring for this wonderful place.

2.       Hope Johnson is a yoga teacher, meditation instructor, and has an essential botanical oils business. She is a long time lover of honey!

3.       Ryan Kadota is the 3rdgeneration owner of Kadota Liquors. He is a certified sake specialist and wine expert.

4.       Lauren Rusert is the assistant State Apiarist, or bee specialist, rugby champion, and honey judge extraordinaire. One of her specialties is breedingvery special parasite sensitive queen bees.

5.       Cody Gregory is a third grade teacher at Volcano School of Arts &Science. Although Cody deal with bees on a regular basis, he has sampled just as much honey as many beekeepers, possibly more!! Cody enjoys playing music,hiking, traveling and of course, tasting honey.

6.       Audrey  Wilson is an author and the much loved food writer for the Hilo Herald Tribune. Her Tuesday columns, talk story and recipes are enjoyed by residents island-wide.

7.       Sonia Martinez is a cookbook author and freelance food writer for several publications in Hawai’i, includingThe Hamakua Times of Honokaa and the Ke Ola Magazine. She is also the Farmer’s Market Correspondent for the Hawai’I Home Grown Food Network. She has maintained a blog with her adventures in food and gardening and her ongoing love affair with Hawai’I <a>http://www.soniatasteshawaii.com<a>

8.      Christian Holt – After graduating from Baltimore International Culinary Arts Institute in 1989, Christian furthered his education working at The Park Hotel in County Cavan Ireland under Chef Spendlove. He traveled that year with the Chef and helped him to compete in the Culinary Olympics in Frankfurt Germany for the Irish team. Eventually making it back to the states, he worked under numerous chefs as well as owning two successful restaurants in his career. After the birth of his daughter he decided to come back to the Big Island. He now resides at Hilo Medical Center in their Food and Nutrition Department.


Ron Hanson – formerly of HoneybeesForever  LLC, Bee Mo Bettah Honey, now has a new business called The Honey Bee Company. He will be rolling out his newline of “Just Honey” at the Festival. He did bees as a child and then after a long hiatus got back to beekeeping when he moved to the Big Island 12 years ago. The bees are his passion and so is the honey they produce.
